Abstract: This paper studies the mathematical definitions of point,line and area symbols in cartography according to the set theory and topology.A figure is composed of point and line cartographic symbols and it is the main body of map.The ground is composed of area cartographic symbols.The figure and ground play the whole function in the transmission of geographical information.
