  • This paper introduces a new way of modeling using feature data in VRML to solve the key problem which is the conflict between the huge spatial data and limited net bandwith.VRML is the tool for creating three-dimensional virtual experience on the world wide web.VRML is designed as a common file format to allow anyone browsing the web to view threedimensional.It is written in plain text and hence can be created using a simple text editor.Using VRML in Web GIS has been developed in many commercial GIS software.The modeling technology based on feature data was generated in 1980s and developed very quickly.The feature data of the geometry and place information of three-dimensional scene are used in it.A structure of VR-Web GIS based on feature data modeling is provided.This paper details in how to realized the system.In the system the method of feature data modeling is used in two fields:① reduce the point of DEM to lessen the data of DEM;② predigest the object model of the three-dimensional scene.Lastly,two algorithms are discussed.
