Integrating the structure and the implementation mechanism of the area map symbol, this paper prcsents a model of designing area map symbols in layers. An area map symbol is described in one layer or more layers, and every layer is implemented in a filling pattern to portray one geographic phenomenon. In the software of Cartosymbo, the method is realized.
