Abstract
In making maps, some people suggest that settlement density be the basis for determining the quotas of settlements, while some other people consider the determination of the quotas to be made according to population density. As to which idea is more practicable, so far no conclusive assertion has been made in map generalization theory. The present article analyzes a host of cartographic data, proving that in making larger than 1: 700,000 topographica maps, settlement density is the main basis for determining quotas of settlements. As for compiling smaller ones, population density is the main choice.
