Thickness Determination of Snow-Ice Layer on Mt. Qomolangma Summit in 2005

  • China re-measured the height of Mt. Qomolangma, the world’s highest peak, in 2005. The ground penetrating radar (GPR) was applied in this measurement for the first time to determine the depth of the snow-ice on the summit. The basic principle of the GPR on depth determination is introduced and the advanced equipment used in this project is presented which is integrated with GPR and GPS. After the process and analysis, the thickness of the snow-ice layer is 3.50 m finally.
